LATEST NEWS

UPDATE 8:00 p.m. THURSDAY 17th May

TRIAL CYCLING ACTIVITY UPDATE:
OUR ‘TRIAL CYCLING’ ACTIVITY HAS RUN INTO A MAJOR ROADBLOCK!

WE ARE ADVISED THAT THE GROUP OF OUTDOOR CLUBS’ INSURANCE POLICY DOES NOT INCLUDE CYCLING AS A COVERED ACTIVITY. IN FACT, THE POLIC ENDORSEMENT SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDES CYCLING AS AN INSURABLE ACTIVITY.

HISTORICALLY, CYCLING HAS NEVER BEEN COVERED AS AN APPROVED ACTIVITY UNDER OUR GROUP INSURANCE POLICY. THIS PAST APRIL, WE NOTIFIED OUR INSURANCE REPRESENTATIVE OF OUR DESIRE TO ADD CYCLING AS A CLUB ACTIVITY. HOWEVER, OUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN REJECTED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY.

GIVEN THIS UNRESOLVABLE AND INSURMOUNTABLE INSURANCE LIABILITY OBSTACLE, I REGRET TO ADVISE THAT, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, THE CLUB ‘TRIAL CYCLING’ ACTIVITY IS WITHDRAWN AND CANCELLED BOTH AS A TEMPORARY AND POSSIBLE FUTURE SANCTIONED CLUB ACTIVITY.

I KNOW THIS WILL COME AS DISAPPOINTING NEWS TO THOSE CYCLING ENTHUSIASTS AMONG US, BUT I LOOK AT IT THIS WAY “BETTER TO HAVE TRIED AND FAILED THAN NEVER TO HAVE TRIED AT ALL”.

Bill Bullas
President
Second Sixties Outdoor Club

SEE UPDATED EQUIPMENT PAGE:
The Tick season is also upon us - look at Tick recognition and Tick Removal information.

Fullerton Loop - Snagmore Loop
Our 16th May outing Elbow Valley was over-subscribed yet three cars took care of the overflow. Thanks to the volunteers! The weather was splendid and various Groups greatly enjoyed some welcome changes of elevation - a splendid 'warm-up' for the more challenging hikes ahead. Well-chosen, Colin, and well run Helmut. We all hope you didn't have to "search every crane and nookie" on return. [That, Helmut, will go down as a classic!]

BEAR SPRAY & BUS SAFETY:
Use of the Bear Spray container has come into effect. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding as you attempt to attach the identification tags as per the exceptionally complete, clear and succinct (sic) instructions given on the bus. With at least two passengers susceptible to respiratory problems it is essential that we prevent any future occurences of bear spray fumes contaminating the bus air conditioning systems.

CALGARY STAMPEDE SHOWBAND EVENT:
This note should serve to remind Club members that there is still time to order FREE TICKETS to the Calgary Stampede Showband event scheduled for Sunday, May 27, 2012 at McMahon Stadium commencing 2:00 PM.

Free tickets are available to members of Second Sixties Outdoor Club only on a first-come, first-served, basis and our deadline for reserving tickets is May 22, 2012.

Therefore, if you are interested in attending this event and wish to order your tickets, please phone Linda Dustan (see your Membership List) or email her before the May 22, 2012 deadline. If you know of any member who does not have email access, but who may be interested in attending, please let them know about this upcoming event and the process for ordering tickets through Linda.

This affords our members an excellent opportunity to experience a celebration of music fostered by marching band activity from across Western Canada. Let's take advantage of this generous offer.

NOTE: This free tickets offer is limited to members of Second Sixties Outdoor Club. Family members who may wish to attend can purchase tickets after May 23rd at the McMahon Stadium box office - cost per ticket is $15.

HIKING SCHEDULE:
The 2012 Hiking Schedule is available for download. Note that weather and variable early season ground conditions continue to give cause for changes at short notice. See:
Hiking Schedule

LOST & FOUND:
Here we go again! One Nalgene 1/2 litre water container left behind yesterday. Could it be yours, Gary Davidge?

President's Corner

Please take another look at Bill's pertinent and timely observations re Hiking Safety.

For over 30 years, the Second Sixties Outdoor Club, based in Calgary, Alberta has provided year round outdoor activities for seniors who share a love of the outdoors and enjoy opportunities to socialize with a group of like-minded individuals. Although originally formed for seniors the Club welcomes new members who are aged 50+, and has a significant number of members in the 50 to 65 age band, the ‘over-fifties'. The Club is unique in being an outdoor club for seniors that operates year-round.

In addition to Hiking, XC Skiing and Snowshoeing the Club offers City Walks, Golf and Social events. In the spring and summer months, members can take advantage of up to 3 outings per week; Hiking in Kananaskis Country and Banff, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks, City Walks and Golf, and, in the winter months, up to 2 outings per week; XC Skiing and Snowshoeing in Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park, and City Walks. Outings to Kananaskis Country and the National Parks are by chartered bus on Wednesdays departing from the northwest of Calgary (see Pickup & Parking).

All activities cater to a wide range of abilities and are conducted with the safety of participants as a prime consideration.

There follows a few 'click on to enlarge' photos from recent outings:

Part way up the 'easy' west side of the Fullerton Loop in wonderful weather …

At the high point on the Fullerton Loop the Group turns from the magnificent view overlooking the Elbow Valley …

A vivacious Ainse Swallowtail butterfly - still for a few critical moments. A large butterfly and one of the most spectacular in Alberta.

Ainse Swallowtails are drawn to dandelions as other photos show on KBDs Smugmug Album of the Event.

A pair of Canada Geese on the shoals of the Elbow River where it flows past Allen Bill Pond - shame we missed a shot of them flying later.

Catkins resplendent by Allen Bill Pond …

Spring is Here!
